The Future of Pragmatic Use of Artificially Intelligent Robots

January 25, 20210

Robotics and Artificial Intelligence just came as a buzz word and stormed the society with frequent use of these words. This wonderful field of study enthralled the entrepreneurs , researchers and manufacturers. Even in the service industry these fields were very impactful.Besides the positive uses of it ,It is perceived and considered as a threat to humanity also and a replacement to human workers in many industries. This was a major stigma which hindered these fields to expand.More over there is a growing concern about the perils of robotics in case of mal functioning . But the question arises that is it possible to utilize this amazing technology for the benefit of humans and the global society. In actual sense, these fields of study created a revolution in technological advancements and also gave a new dimension to innovative explorations. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a general term that implies the use of a computer to model and/or replicate intelligent behavior. Dartmouth College professor John McCarthy coined the term, “artificial intelligence,” and is widely known as the “father of AI.” in the summer of 1956, McCarthy, along with nine other scientists and mathematicians from Harvard, Bell Labs, and IBM, developed the concept of programming machines to use language and solve problems while improving over time. McCarthy went on to teach at Stanford for nearly 40 years and received the Turing Award in 1971 for his work in AI. He passed away in 2011. Research in AI focuses on the development and analysis of algorithms that learn and/or perform intelligent behavior with minimal human intervention. Artificial Intelligence (AI) also known as machine intelligence, is the field developing computers and robots capable of parsing data contextually to provide requested information, supply analysis, or trigger events based on findings. Through techniques like machine learning and neural networks, companies globally are investing in teaching machines to ‘think’ more like humans. Artificial intelligence can help reduce human error, create more precise analytics, and turn data collecting devices into powerful diagnostic tools. One example of this is wearable devices such as smart watches and fitness trackers, which put data in the hands of consumers to empower them to play a more active role managing their health. Another emerging field of study and a popular NLP use is Conversational AI, commonly seen in online chatbots , which use AI to mimic human conversation via online chat. The chatbots market has taken off in the past few years, bringing cost savings and improved customer service to nearly all industries, especially in the booming e-commerce trend. There is another emerging trend of deep learning or “unsupervised learning” which is the next generation of artificial intelligence that lets computers teach themselves. Deep learning techniques program machines to perform high-level thought and abstractions, such as image recognition. The technology has advanced marketing by enabling more personalization, audience clustering, predictive marketing, and sophisticated brand sentiment analysis. There have been numerous advancements, research and production related activities in these fields . Startups and legacy players alike are investing in AI technology. Some of the leaders include household names like: Amazon , Apple ,Google (DeepMind), Facebook, Microsoft , s well as newcomers such as: Benevolent AI , CUJO AI ,Drive.ai ,Petuum . APEX Technologies was also ranked as the top artificial intelligence company in China last year. Now contemplating all the definitions , concepts about these fields of study there are certain myths which surround these areas of study. The first is that a lot of people wonder if robotics is a subset of artificial intelligence. Others wonder if they are the same things. The first thing to clarify is that robotics and artificial intelligence are not the same things at all. In fact, the two fields are almost entirely separate , as explained by Alex Owen-Hill, an AI specialist , in his article on his blog ROBOTIC.com. Anshul Sharma , CEO of Fluper also busts a few myths about Artificial intelligence in his article in renowned magazine ENTREPRENEUR . He says that Artificial intelligence (AI) is competent to have a revolutionary impact on businesses globally. Talking about the information technology sector, it is no longer merely about codifying business logic. Instead, more about making tasks effortless, innovative and trouble-free. Insight is indeed the modern currency, and the pace with which we all can scale that insight is the fundamental of value creation. These fallacies and myths are , Myth 1: AI Will Replace Humans , Myth 2: AI Implementation Needs Huge Investment , Myth 3: AI Algorithms are Competent to Process Any Data , Myth 4: AI will Conquer Humanity , Myth 5: AI can Imitate Human Emotions. Its not exactly true and is creating ambiguity about these tremendous fields. Artificial Intelligence is being successfully used in Banking & financial sector , Supply chain & logistics and E-Commerce. There are many AI focused innovative startups too in the world. However All these uses are there but in a limited way .There are many legal, technological and social limitations, including the myths about these fields which are making it less useful and pragmatic. As far as the robots are concerned , a few of the experiments have been done to do some customer service , manual labor work or production related activities through specially designed robots but it has not been a cost effective and sustainable solution. The recent Corona pandemic has forced the governments and experts divert their focus of research towards production of artificially intelligent robots which can perform various dangerous and life threatening duties , like Robot doctors and nursing staff , Robot rescue operators , security and cleanliness and some other life threatening duties in case of natural clematis , disasters ,pandemics and other crises. In his recent report Coronavirus: Robot doctor could help with future outbreak , Kenneth Macdonald , BBC Scotland Science Correspondent has clearly mentioned that Artificial intelligence and robotics experts in Edinburgh are working to create what they hope will be the first healthcare robots to hold a conversation with more than one person at a time. The drive to create what are called socially assistive robots (SARs) is the first project to be announced by the National Robotarium. It is a partnership between Heriot-Watt and Edinburgh that aims to create a world-leading centre for robotics and AI. Its new building is due to open on the Heriot-Watt campus in 2021. This will have a direct impact on efforts to save humans from dangers and death hazards in case of direct exposure. Special duties can be assigned to these robots which can be performed by programing them in a way that they use AI and machine learning . Besides manufacturing robots to perform critical duties , AI is also being planned to identify, track and forecast outbreaks , to help diagnose the virus as the solution improves CT diagnosis speed. Chinese e-commerce giant Ali baba also built an AI-powered diagnosis system they claim is 96% accurate at diagnosing the virus in seconds. Also to process healthcare claims and the delivery of supplies in tough and far flung areas , says Bernard Marr from Enterprise Tech. AI can no longer be treated as a “black box” that receives input and generates output without a clear understanding of what is going on inside. Companies need to consider and address all kinds of risks—external, physical, digital—and then communicate those risks to users. There fore it is the need of the hour that the more pragmatic and human friendly role should be assigned to AI and Robotics which can be in the fields which are hazardous to save human beings from disaster exposure.
